Readership VS Circulation

Circulation is a count of how many copies of a particular publication are distributed. Circulation audits are provided by the Audit Bureau of Circulations (ABC). whereas Readership is an estimate of how many readers a publication has. As most publications have more than one reader per copy, the NRS readership estimate is very different from the circulation count.

Binary Opposition

Definition: Binary opposition is the system by which, in language and thought, two theoretical opposites are strictly defined and set off against one another.

here are some examples in the media industry-

Pop
  • melody
  • 'good' singing
  • clean living
  • Desexualised - love not sex
  • Non-Political
  • Not necessary to play your own instruments or write your own songs
  • 'contrived' - fake/put together
  • Happy
  • Generally good looking
Rock
  • Volume
  • Good singing is less important
  • Drugs and alcohol
  • Sexual
  • Political
  • it is a must to play your own instruments and write your own songs
  • 'authentic'
  • Angry
  • not necessary to be 'good looking'
These are just some ideas that we as a class brainstormed and they do not apply to all songs in each genre. This helps me to understand what my magazine should look like and what type of people it will focus on. it also tells me what my magazine should include.

Different Types Of Research

Research

to enable to me to create a magazine I will need to establish a target audience. To do this I will need to carry out some research.

Qualitative research: is characterised by its aims, which relate to understanding some aspect of social life, and its methods which (in general) generate words, rather the numbers, as data for analysis.

Quantitative research: Is about asking people for their opinions in a structured way so that you can produce hard facts and statistics to guide you. to get reliable statistical results, its important to survey people in fairly large numbers and to make sure they are a representative sample of your target audience.

Primary research: is any type of research that you go out and collect yourself. Examples include surveys, interviews, observations, and ethnographic research. A good researcher knows how to use both primary and secondary sources in her writing and to integrate them in a cohesive fashion.

secondary research: (also known as desk research) involves the summary, collation and/or synthesis of existing research rather than primary research, where data is collected from, for example, research subjects or experiments

Ray Gun magazine

These are two separate editions of David Carson's Ray Gun magazine

Pros:
  1. It stands out
  2. Eye catching
  3. Unique
  4. Reflects the type of music within
  5. Push other magazines to up their game in magazine design

Cons:
  1. No consistency/ hard to recognise
  2. To alternative/not likeable
  3. To much going on/crowded
  4. Expensive

My opinion

I think that David is very creative and if I were to see this in a shop this would definitely catch my eye and I would pick it up, however I am not sure if I would like it enough to buy it.

My Magazine

If I were to do this again I would make sure that I didn't make any spelling mistakes or make sure that I had not left any grammatical errors unchecked. I would also put more thought into my contents page to make sure it didn't let the rest of the work down.

The four F's

There are four F's that are commonly used in magazine design. These are viewed as 'law' by some magazine designers and are always followed and taken into consideration when designing a magazine.

These are:
  • Format - this is the magazines overall look and feel.
  • Formula - this is what is included in the magazine.
  • Frame - this is the margins and gutters on and inside the magazine.
  • Function - this is what the magazine is trying to achieve and the message it is trying to get across.

Without these key design features magazines could and would look very strange making it hard for us to find a magazine that we wanted.

The Secrets Of Magazine Design

The secrets of magazine over design: The Key Ingredients

Masthead - the name of the magazine displayed in a specific typeface. this is the visual branding of the title and is often done is a specially designed typeface to be easily recognised and unique. the masthead - also called a title - is usually used on the contents page inside as well as the front cover, and as a logo for advertising and branding purposes.

Dateline - month and year of publication, often with the price. note that a monthly magazine usually hits the news-stands the month before the cover date.

Coverlines - from the 1950's, greater competition on the newsstands resulted in more cover lines. today, some magazines print special covers for the subscribers' copies that use few cover lines. cosmopolitan magazine uses a lot of detracting from it to much. a mistake often made with cover lines is that they run over an image that has a lot of cover changes, rendering the words difficult to read.

Main cover line - This is very large - taking up almost a quarter of the magazine cover - and comes in three layers, each with a different colour. Note the main cover line is positioned against the model's shoulder so it shows up clearly.

Left third - the left of the magazine cover is vital for the sales in shops where the magazine is not shown full-frontal. the title must be easily recognisable in a display of dozens of competitors. the start of the masthead is important here, as are short Cover lines that are easy to read.
the top fifth of the cover - usually dominated by the masthead - may be the vital part in supermarkets, where magazines are displayed differently.
