The four F's

There are four F's that are commonly used in magazine design. These are viewed as 'law' by some magazine designers and are always followed and taken into consideration when designing a magazine.

These are:
  • Format - this is the magazines overall look and feel.
  • Formula - this is what is included in the magazine.
  • Frame - this is the margins and gutters on and inside the magazine.
  • Function - this is what the magazine is trying to achieve and the message it is trying to get across.

Without these key design features magazines could and would look very strange making it hard for us to find a magazine that we wanted.
